THREAD

Why don& #39;t we live in a house? Why don& #39;t we have a garden? Not unkind, but surprised. He is 6. Just one of the many consequences of our increasingly homogeneous communities...
We live in a rapidly gentrifying corner of SE London. 37% of children in our borough live in poverty, but that& #39;s not reflected at my son& #39;s school. That& #39;s not reflected in most children& #39;s books either - they& #39;re a pretty white, middle class affair too.
My son noticed once when a character in his story lived in a block of flats. The book wasn& #39;t about class or poverty or any deficit mindset. He just lived in a flat. (Middle class people live in flats too.) Since then I& #39;ve looked out for books which feature people living in flats.
Here are some I& #39;ve come across, which suit my kids& #39; reading ages (2 and 6). If you know of any more, feel free to add them in the comments

Lulu Loves Flowers by Anna McQuinn, illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw
I love this one. You can only tell Lulu lives in a flat by the view from one of the illustrations. Lulu loves flowers. She uses a community garden - we infer she doesn& #39;t have her own but it& #39;s not spelled out.

A Mammoth in the Fridge by M. Escoffier and M. Maudet
A story about a mammoth in a fridge. The fridge just happens to be in a kitchen in a block of flats. It& #39;s not an issue or important to the story in any way. (Why should it be?)

The Neighbors by Einat Tsarfati
Fantastic illustrations - a girl climbs the 7 floors to her flat and imagines what& #39;s behind the doors she passes.

Parents, guardians, teachers - show your kids how other people live their lives in their school, town, city, country, world. Get out of that bubble - it& #39;s win-win. There doesn& #39;t need to be a deeper message
