How Randomness Can Liberate You:

A short thread

👇
Our brains are pattern-seeking and agency-detecting.

We like order & control.

We are naturally egotistical and self-referential.

We are terrible at differentiating between correlation & causation.
“There must be purpose to all this!”

There must be meaning.

BUT
The acceptance of randomness & luck in your everyday life can be liberating & inspiring,

despite your brain’s intense desire to protect you from chaos.
Like all high-level thought processes, there is a paradox that needs to be held & used symbiotically.

On one hand, take responsibility for everything to do with your world.
On the other, luck & randomness plays a larger role in life outcomes than your brain will want you to believe.

Many people take responsibility for good outcomes, blame bad outcomes on luck.
Others have evolved their thinking to accept responsibility for all outcomes, downplaying the role of randomness.

Neither are ideal. And holding two seemingly disparate ideas at the one time is the aim for high performance.
Here’s a consideration then:

Take responsibility for your actions & decision making.

But accept that outcomes are more heavily influenced by luck & randomness than you want to believe.
Focus on your process. Absolve yourself of the responsibility over the outcome.

Accept both personal responsibility & randomness.

And use them together.
Let it liberate you.
