Articles like these freak out a lot of parents - it's frankly irresponsible. Other reports revealed these daycares had *no* safety protocols. Our kids have been in daycare in Arizona since June 1. I'd say that so far it has been a success. Here's how it's worked. 1/n https://twitter.com/seungminkim/status/1280504927857582082
Curbside dropoff + curbside pickup, so parents are never face-to-face with any teachers. This works great thanks to awesome staff who greet the kids each morning. Our 2 yo and 4yo hop out of the car, wave and smile on the curb, and skedaddle inside with a teacher.
At drop-off, we roll down the windows and every person in the car has their temperature checked. If anyone has a fever, no one is allowed out of the car. (So far no one has had a fever in our family, not sure what the rate has been school-wide.)
All adults in the building are masked. Our 2 yo and 4 yo seem both totally cool with it. They are used to seeing masked people, so no big deal. And, just in cast, their teachers wear cute masks with fun patterns.
All classes are limited to 10 kids and 2 teachers and - importantly, as i will explain - the classes never interact with one another. This is key.
Since opening, 0 students have had COVID. There've been 2 separate incidents when a staff tested + for COVID. In response, the whole school closed for 1 day for a deep clean and the infected teacher's students (and their siblings) stayed home for 2 weeks.
Our 4 yo's teacher was one w/ COVID, which meant both our kids were home for 2 wks. This was a drag, but was well worth it when it comes to safety. (And she recovered quickly!) Most importantly, in neither case did the infected staff-member spread COVID to anyone else at school.
The policies ultimately do not take away from the benefits of school: it's still just as fun & stimulating for the kids. The intermittent closures are a pain, of course, but it's the least we can do to keep a safe environment for our kids. And it also means preschool can go on.
I'm a superstitious person & hate to publicly say things are going well, lest disaster strike. But the baseless horror stories out there about preschool are not okay. People have enough to worry about. Let's be reasonable when we think about how we can get child-care going. [end]
