No deaths are good deaths. Many of the deaths from covid, but not all, are older people & people with health conditions - THEY ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. But deaths are not the only factor here. Many survivors are experiencing debilitating health conditions, especially in the lungs. https://twitter.com/bcorchiolo/status/1280588854098104323
This could end up being millions of otherwise healthy Americans with lifelong health issues - imagine a huge portion of our population having to have had worked in the coal mines of the 1800's, and you get an idea.
The current plan seems to be to ignore the disease. Moral issues aside (and, boy, is that a moral issue), the economic perils of ignoring it are beyond imaginable. Our healthcare system will collapse beneath the weight of millions of Americans with lifelong health issues.
This does not mean coronavirus is not beatable. The answer is to listen to scientists & infectious disease experts. Potent treatments & vaccines are being developed! But that means slowing the spread as much as possible until they're ready & that requires a worldwide effort.
Leaving WHO is simply a way to weaken that worldwide effort. And staying in WHO isn't a way to say WHO has been perfect - they've been far from perfect. It just means by being inside it we're more likely to save more American lives & slow the spread of the disease.
We have a unique situation in our history, in that what is good for one country is good for us all when it comes to battling coronavirus. Let's be a part of the world, not remove ourselves from it. Especially when most the rest of the world is doing a better job than we are! 🙏❤️
