I found out this morning, by way of an unceremonious note left on my door, that my landlady passed away in early June. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😔" title="Nachdenkliches Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Nachdenkliches Gesicht">
Dr. Linda Rhodes was born and raised in San Antonio, a former pediatrician, psychiatrist and asst. professor at @UTHealthSA. I met her eight years ago after moving into the sweet little Mahncke Park apartment I scored on Craigslist.
We talked on the phone about twice a year. The calls were never short— she would tell me lots of history about the house she grew up in, the one at the front of our lot that’s since been converted into a fourplex, and that her dad built the bldg I live in back in the ‘80s.
She walked across the park to attend @LamarElemSAISD as a child and graduated from Jefferson High School. She told lots of stories about traveling to China on her own and visiting their hospitals. She was fiercely independent. I related to her a lot in that way.
The last time I talked to her it was to try and get in touch with one of my neighbors whose car was about to get towed. She spent about 15 minutes looking for his number and talking about her dog, who she loved very much.
I sent a note with July’s rent wishing her well and asking if she needed groceries. I’m sad I didn’t know she was already gone. But I’m very glad she shared part of her life and memories with me. I give thanks every day for the safe little home I have bc of Linda. Rest in peace.
