As the parent of a child who, according to the CDC, is high risk for severe complications if she were to get Covid-19, I have to say the language so many of us are using as we talk about getting people back into schools is privileged and ableist, and it’s literally exhausting
There are layered complications w/any plan. I don’t envy those who have to make the decisions. But each of our choices as educators on large & small scale show who/what we are willing to sacrifice. I hope that’s something we reflect on & not just relegate to cost-benefit analysis
When we say “some kids” and “some staff,” as related to anything we decide, those voices deserve value too even if they are “smaller numbers.” We need to know and prove we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe, not just the usually healthy and privileged.
