Restraint is learned with experience… and I that's definitely true of an art director's feedback/criticism style. I've found that, instead of puffing out my chest & changing 25 things because I can, that if I take a step back, that piece might be good as is (or close to it)…
I will still kick your ass over focal point, color balance and kerning, but I've learned to let a lot of subjective design decisions go. Like, if you want to put a shape in the upper right corner, and I'd rather center it, who the fuck am I to make you change it?
Too much feedback & criticism kill designer morale. I've been on the other side. Let a designer have ownership in their project. And to not be afraid to make design decisions and take creative risks. You don't need to put your 'stamp' on everything.
