A thing that keeps striking me is that, if anything, the moment we’re living through is characterized by the scope of discourse expanding beyond its previous bounds. That the intellectual friction/conflict we’re experiencing is the result of expansion not contraction.
There is certainly a far greater diversity of opinion available to me today than there was 20 years ago. Lots of stuff that was taboo, or buried, or hidden, or ignored, or blown off...it’s out there now and can be read, followed, amplified.
There are lots of negative consequences for everything being everywhere. But I’m sorry it’s hard to paint our current predicament as being the result of monomaniacal forces strangling the last gasping breath of free speech.
As for the fear of people losing their jobs/livelihoods as a result of pissing off some group or another online...friends let me tell you about unions, workers rights, collective bargaining agreements, universal healthcare and UBI.
And if you’re *really* concerned about people losing jobs, being blacklisted, not being promoted for arbitrary/unjust reasons...maybe start listening to the folks trying to explain structural racism and gender inequality to you? They have lots of these stories!
