I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE NAPKIN BOMBING
Because I went on a slight spiral with this last night
I think most of us know this, but here's a slight recap: In Bloodline there is a mystery of someone leaving a handwritten note for Leia on a napkin with the word “RUN”. This was before the building was bombed and the note saved Leia’s life and all the senators who were with her.
But it’s still an unsolved mystery. We never found out who left the note, which is bizarre since it’s a critical moment in the story.

I know we’ve all talked for years about how we think it’s Ben since he writes by hand, but I want to dive a little bit deeper.
Something I knew in the past but completely forgot about until now - Rian Johnson, while working on TLJ, was the one who told Claudia Gray to put this in the novel.
So Rian did this at the same time that he established that Ben does calligraphy, making him the only person we know of who writes by hand. And while this is an adorable fun fact about Ben, it had zero relevance to TLJ. And Rian never does anything without purpose.
Here’s where it gets deeper: What was the other thing Rian knew and was setting up in TLJ? The Worlds Between Worlds and that Ben will be there.
Yes I feel confident that this was all planned, I’ve written about it here. https://twitter.com/twothatareone/status/1255911226502193152?s=20
Here’s a great video to watch on the similarities between Ahch-To and Mortis if you want more. We know Dave Filoni told Rian to rewatch the Mortis arc while writing TLJ. And some smart people had already picked up on all this.
So Rian, who knows Ben will end up in the WBW at the end of IX, set up this entire thing of him both writing by hand, and then a hand-written note saves Leia’s life. Something that couldn’t be answered yet in Bloodline.
Because Ben is going to be saving her from the WBW. The WBW exists across all time and space, so yes, Ben should be able to save her in that moment.
Now I’m assuming Ben doesn’t have a pen on him in the WBW. But he could grab one from the room on Hosnian Prime. It’s also interesting that the note was written on a napkin, something that already existed in the room, rather than a separate piece of paper.
There have been two huge unsolved book mysteries that have been plaguing us for years. The “I’ll come back for you sweetheart” voice that Rey heard all her life and the Napkin Bombing. And Ben being in the WBW is the answer to both of these things.
At some point in the future I think we’re going to see Ben slip his mama a note and save her life. đŸ„ș And we have Rian Johnson to thank for this. I’m onto you, sir.
