Here’s the thing about anyi-authoritarianism:

- the authoritarian is the person in power with no accountability, enormous money, and men with guns who can essentially kill you at will
- the authoritarian is not the mad underemployed millennial who thinks your book sucked

When @jk_rowling yells ugly hatred and endangers the safety and well-being of trans children from her platform, she is being a million million times more authoritarian than any of her critics could ever be.

When @noamchomskyT argues that antifa are the real fascists, despite killing no people while the far right commits act after act of mass murder, this is thousands of times more authoritarian than any of his antifascist critics could ever be.

Rowling knows nothing of trans people, must like Chomsky knows nothing of the modern far right.

Authoritarianism is reflected in speaking with authority about topics in which one is completely ignorant.

Despite their protestations that such things are obsolete in today's illiberal society, I would gladly engage @jk_rowling or @noamchomskyT in a public debate on either of those topics.

They will never.

Do you think Chomsky could hold court with me in a debate on contemporary white supremacy extremism? Do you think Rowling could hold court with me on the medical needs of transgender people?

Do you think either of them would deign to commit their time engaging with me—compared to them, a relative nobody?

I am not a world famous scholar. I am not a world famous multi-millionaire author.

Do you think either of them would give me the time of day?

Tell me then, what is the illiberalism of which they speak? What is the death of discourse they so lament?

They don't fear a wave of coming intolerance.

They fear a wave of people having the temerity to impeach them when they speak out of turn on topics far out of their ambit.
