THREAD: We canNOT think of #streaming as simply a practice that separates Ss based on #academicperformance. In truth it is a series of practices that #marginalizes Ss based on #socialidentity. It takes the form of #lowerExpectations for #IBR (Indigenous, Black & racialized) Ss.
2. These practices are sometimes hidden under notions of #care for Ss & coded in the language of providing Ss #multiplepathways. It is a factory model orientation that #lowersexpectations for IBR Ss and pushes them into fields that r seen as "more appropriate" for them.
3. There isNT anything wrong with these fields but too often we know or have heard consistent stories of beliefs #IBRM ppl navigated bc they were not seen as "capable". Many times well intentioned teachers were "guiding" them to less than their highest potential.
4. As a parent I fought every semester of every yr of both my sons high school careers. (Both in HS racialized Black). I fought, argued & EACH semester they kept trying to place my boys in applied. When I talked abt #IEP accommodations- was told- "we r trying to prep for uni" 😳
In #TDSB streaming practices were identified in various ways incl:
-which Ss were reading by end of Grade 1.
- transition to HS & which pathways- applied & academic
- which identities of Ss were over represented in SpEd & underrepresented in gifted
- which Ss were graduating
The provinces shift to stop in GR 9 IS encouraging. It however must follow that #unlearning with educators happening to challenge mindsets and that practices that marginalizes #IBRM Ss are challenged AND proper supports are put in place.
7. It has been done successfully. Amazing folks like @Alisongsv has written & discussed it forever. Principals like @mgala19 have done it successfully with HUGE results. I've been in tears listening to #Black & racialized Ss talk abt how the shift & support changed their futures
8. We can close gaps in #publiceducation. Theres tons of research & many brilliant practitioners whove been doing it. We need ppl to actually listen. Stop referring to predominantly white, male scholarship that sees #equity as a distraction. We can reimagine a new #OntEd for ALL
