Nehru Vs Modi —

This short thread is about an incident under Jawaharlal Nehru’s rule that was incredibly similar in its ruthlessness to the Galwan clash. What differs, though, is the reaction of the leader of the country.
On 20 Oct 1959 in Ladakh, 2 members of an Indian Police Party went missing. Back then the Indian police was manning the 2,500 mile long border with Tibet. A search party comprising of 20 policemen was sent to look for the missing members.
They were attacked by Chinese soldiers with automatic weapons and hand grenades. Our men fired back but were overwhelmed. 10 of ours died and many others were injured.
This is definitively similar to the Galwan incident in the way that a substantial number of our men were killed by sudden Chinese aggression.

What has been starkly different though, is the reaction of the Indian side.

Let’s compare.
1959 —
There were no casualties on the Chinese side.

2020 —
At least 43 Chinese have been confirmed dead. An ex-PLA officer said over 100 were killed. This could very well be true seeing China’s reaction post the bloody tussle.
1959 —
The Chinese returned our dead after 3 weeks.

2020 —
Very soon after the clash, Indian soldiers who were captured by China were returned. And India too had taken many Chinese hostage.
1959 —
The Nehru government sent diplomatic notes to the Chinese Ambassador informing them of the events. Pusillanimity.

2020 —
India has unleashed an elaborate diplomatic charge at China in collaboration with world powers. Major economic decisions are also being taken.
1959 —
After the Ladakh incident, Nehru said in Parliament: “…at no time since Independence have our defenses been in better condition...” Utter lies.

2020 —
PM Modi openly acknowledged the martyrdom of the soldiers and categorically said India would not yield an inch.
1959 —
General Thorat met Krishna Menon as he wasn’t being heard and the situation on the LAC was serious. But Menon dismissed his fears saying there would be no war.

2020 —
PM Modi himself went to Ladakh and met the CDS, COAS, 14 Corps Commander and Northern Army Commander.
1959 —
Nehru’s DM Menon said to Thorat that any problem along the LAC would be solved diplomatically.

2020 —
India has moved many of its lethal land and air assets to the LAC. It is carrying out combat day and night patrols signalling to the Chinese a firm intention.
In conclusion:

1)There is no comparison between Nehru and Modi. The former was a slim tree that bent in the slightest of winds, while the latter stands even more robust when a gale hits.

2) China may still try something, but it sure as hell won’t see a 1962-like outcome.
