Today, FDA issued exposure modification orders for Philip Morris Products S.A.’s IQOS System, which permits the products to be marketed with specific information about reduced exposure. Even with this action, these products are not safe nor “FDA approved.” https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-authorizes-marketing-iqos-tobacco-heating-system-reduced-exposure-information?utm_source=CTPTwitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ctp-pmimrtp
Today’s authorization requires Philip Morris Products S.A. to conduct postmarket surveillance and studies to determine whether the orders continue to be appropriate, including assessing the potential for increased use among youth.
The exposure modification orders issued for the IQOS Tobacco Heating System are effective for 4 years, barring, among other things, any finding that the orders are no longer expected to benefit the health of the population as a whole.
