I had tweeted to @TaylorLorenz to focus on her work and I still think she should but also I think she should resign from the @nytimes because she is not practicing jounslism anymore. Her practice is valuable but not to journalistic standards.
This NYTimes TikTok celebrity slammed @danprimack and said on Twitter she no longer respects him because he didn’t invite her to be interviewed on his show.
It’s not hard to see how an ego can get out of hand, just as it can with the police. The ego uses their platforms of power to slam other people like @danprimack unfairly and without due process.
I think they are unaware of the damage they leave in their wake to others not involved. It’s a lot like Trump’s behavior. He is influential in many people’s lives and literally causes people harm indirectly, eg, promoting drugs and inciting violence.
Who holds these people accountable? The @nytimes is the only entity that can hold their own reporters accountable. They have that level of authority over themselves and no one else does.
It’s gotten to the point where trust has become an issue. Having watched the drama unfold that Lorenz is fueling, I will have a hard time wondering about her motives and fairness with the information she produces in the future.
I’ll also say that the reason why this is about ‘cancel culture’ is because Lorenz has been actively trying to cancel several people. Even as she has every right to question any attacks on her, she used the NYTimes to become a TikTok celebrity & is now armed and pointing guns.
After @TaylorLorenz complained to her followers that she was not chosen to be on @danprimack's show, he provided some new info that she didn't have. Yet, she continued to act mean and aggressive towards him: https://twitter.com/danprimack/status/1280255451423297549?s=20
Suddenly, in a single instant, this @nytimes writer began using her following to bash & harm @danprimack for not letting her on his show, even though he wanted her on & her employer refused. Then she went on to bash him more. Knee-jerk reactions by journalists are dangerous.
I am a nobody and no one has any interest in my opinion. Yet, I can't help but get upset about this and say so. This is indicative not of a particular person - we all have flaws & we all want to defend ourselves - but this is exactly the main problem with journalism today.
The main problem with journalism today is the lack of time and effort that people put into their work, leaving errors and alternative motives to be questioned.
I was contacted recently by an NBC reporter who is a colleague of Taylor Lorenz who wanted to do a story about the history of Know Your Meme. I said I would be willing, but that it would require significant research on her part. She said she was willing.
When it came time for the very first interview to begin, she said she only had time for a 15min call. I said it would take at least an hour to provide the story since its so different than what has been reported. She said she didn't have that kind of time & the story was dropped
It was a classic example of the lack of time & care that journalists put into their work. My life was turned upside down by a much worse person. Its a story I'm still working on to unwind. Same with Know Your Meme. My voice has never had a chance.
I see Taylor Lorenz being attacked just like I was back in the day, and I see her fighting back, which is what I did too. What I do not see however is even a glimmer of accountability or humility. There is zero accountability here, and this is downright scary for journalism.
Just looking further. In this tweet she says that it was herself that decided not to be on his show. She said above though that she was glad it was her employer who didn’t let her. This breaks truth because both statements can not be true. https://twitter.com/taylorlorenz/status/1280252540064538625?s=21 https://twitter.com/taylorlorenz/status/1280252540064538625
This is not about tech vs media, it’s about TRUTH!!! You only have one job: tell the truth Cc @nytimes who is supposed to be the best at this.
I’ve watched colleagues of mine bash the @nytimes a lot recently and I’ve been trying to understand but I’ve been having a difficult time. I trust them and their opinions so I’ve been trying to understand what I’m missing, as I’ve thought highly of the @nytimes my whole life.
Now I have my own understanding to go by. It’s not acceptable for any NYTimes writers to lie.
I woke up even more disappointed as it’s just now sinking in that the @nytimes has blatant liars. This thread shows the blatant lie clearly. And the lie was about herself and her own ego. Fuck 2020.
I’m pissed off at the @nytimes and the failure of journalism. I have my own story about being harrassed that makes her claim seem like a complaint about the taste of a cupcake. I do not believe that she needs to play the victim card as she is doing right now.
Meanwhile, there is real harassment online that many people can not handle, and the journalists who should be focused on it are looking the wrong way.
If we can not have Truth through jounalism, what’s left? This is the last stop for democracy.
Just please, not the New York Times. We need you now more than ever.
I was just blocked by @TaylorLorenz who never followed me or interacted with me. This is how she deals with being accountable for lying I assume. This thread clarifies that this @nytimes writer blatantly lied. Will the @nytimes block me too?
