I find myself asking a lot; what makes her so special? Why is it I always find myself coming back to her when I wonder who my favourite film character is?

It’s something I’ve ive never really known the true answer to until recently; here is that answer.
Sure we can go on about phenomenal acting and consistency, because we all love that in a character but be honest, we don’t pick our favourites because of that. We pick them because of empathy, relatability and the emotional connection we have to them.
Back in December of 2015 I was a nobody in terms of Star Wars. I had no clue about anything apart from the man who breathed weird and the lightsabers. I contemplated watching the films in the build up to TFA but decided against it because I didn’t see myself getting invested...
However something magical happened. I found myself more in love with something than I ever had before. All of these characters like the great Han Solo, the legendary Luke Skywalker; id only heard about these people through stories from my friends growing up.
Tales of these magical adventures while I sat bored, missing out on it all.

And then that brings us neatly onto her.
Rey instantly stuck out to me purely because of how innocent she seemed, with the theme sounding adventurous and childlike, her actions remained true to that. I remember back in the cinema seeing this; thinking β€œthis is me. I’m this kid growing up longing to see all of this...
...unfold.” Rey watches with eager eyes as ships take off from her planet, we know she doesn’t want to be there and that sucks- I felt for her instantly because I could see her daily struggle that had to happen for survival. She didn’t deserve this.
Rey has it so tough from the word β€˜go’ and the film does so well with making you empathise with her character through subtle narrative choices. Little facts like the reason for her hairstyle (https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="πŸ₯Ί" title="Pleading face" aria-label="Emoji: Pleading face">) all just push together this drive and need for us to see her succeed.
As a nobody in the franchise; Rey was a clean start in TFA, essentially the same as me, she was looking for her place in this franchise; trying to see if she fitted in, as was I. A lot of Rey’s journey is relatable because it feels like ours and that’s amazing.
Rey is like our passage, our vessel, our introduction into this amazing galaxy full of life and adventure. I saw it through Rey’s eyes, experiencing it with her so I’ll always have what I feel is that personal connection with her character. I’ll never forget the helmet scenehttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="πŸ₯Ί" title="Pleading face" aria-label="Emoji: Pleading face">
And you know what? I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. This is our character. Rey is our hero.

Rey is a skywalker.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU’VE READ ALL OF THIS! I worked hard on it so if you wanted to RT...https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="πŸ₯Ί" title="Pleading face" aria-label="Emoji: Pleading face">
