Beautiful pic of the happy Ferrari crew welcoming #FrenchGP winner Jacky Ickx home #OnThisDay in '68 after he'd scored his maiden GP win at Rouen in this achingly elegant Ferrari 312. But, like so many at that time, it was a tragic race. (1/3)
On lap 3, 40-year-old Jo Schlesser's Honda RA302 (pic) slid wide at the Six Frères corner & crashed into an earth bank. It caught fire & its full fuel tank ignited the car's magnesium-bodied chassis, leaving Schlesser with no chance of survival. #RIP. But the race went on. (2/3)
#AnorakFact: Jo Schlesser was a close friend of Guy Ligier, which is why Ligier's cars were all tagged with the JS prefix, as a tribute. So here's a pic of the launch of the superb Ligier JS11, in early '79, drivers Patrick Depailler & Jacques Laffite in attendance. (3/3)
