Hello! I'm Fiona ( @fionally). Thank you, @ratuteragung, for inviting me to tweet on here this week. Let me start by telling you a bit about myself and what I’ll likely share in the coming week.
First, I’m not a historian in the conventional sense of the term, tho I am interested in narratives of the past, how knowledge of the past is made, and why it matters, especially in regards to the 20th c transition from colonial rule to independence
I engage with these topics through the study of literature and the arts, primarily in Malaysian contexts. Given my PhD training in English (literature) and that I teach in an English dept, I work primarily with literary cultural archives in English and in translation.
Life is a kinda intense right now, so let’s see how this week goes. Perhaps I’ll share some thoughts from my published & ongoing research. Or, reflect on what it means to understand history through literature and why it matters that we do.
Feel free to share your thoughts, though I might be a bit slow to respond. Would especially love to see reading recommendations of literature that engages with history in the region. There is so much to read and learn!
