cinematic significance of monster - red velvet irene & seulgi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ujb-gvqsoi0">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
the mv started with seulgi crawling towards irene and seulgi behind irene making us think that seulgi is the monster controlling irene
another comment would be the set. idk what type of architecture this is but it somehow reminds me of goth architecture which gives off an eerie vibe
also the amount of dutch tilt they used in this mv is insane. a dutch tilt in film is a camera angle that is used for dramatic effect to portray disorientation, uneasiness, or even madness hence it is purposely slanted
in this case, i think it portrays how us, viewers feel uneasy about how seulgi is crawling towards irene in a creepy manner - as if she& #39;s a prey that she& #39;s been waiting to devour
the use of color and lighting in this particular scene is also smart. color psychology in film shows how red can mean either anger, passion, love, or aggression and green is healing, soothing, and jealousy at the same time
u can see that half of irene& #39;s face is light with green and the other half is red. she& #39;s also cutting a photo of a skull while the lyrics go "i& #39;ll crack every joint in my body and come close to your bed"
in old horror films, u can observe how the use of cracking bones as a way to scare children and even the phrase "there are monsters under your bed"
in this scene irene makes a stabbing motion while the room is almost lit with purple light that can mean cruelty. also the high camera angle makes irene look small as if she& #39;s innocent and harmless
see the parallel bet. these 2 shots where irene is showed as innocent and the other one is scary - this can also represent the two shadows in the teasers. maybe both the girls have two shadows which is their good and the monster side
this part is interesting bc u can see that at the first part seulgi is trying to control irene but then irene switches to control seulgi instead. this can represent how seulgi may be fighting with her monster which is irene
irene continues to have control over seulgi and then a quick dutch tilt when seulgi was trying to remove irene& #39;s hand w/c again shows seulgi& #39;s discomfort
also notice the change in irene& #39;s facial expression when she& #39;s looking at seulgi vs. when she& #39;s looking at the camera. it& #39;s as if she& #39;s looking at seulgi using her first shadow and when she& #39;s looking at the camera she uses her 2nd
these are interesting cuts because in the first part, u can see irene sleeping while seulgi stares on the window while in the second cut seulgi is asleep and irene is staring at her - going back to the first part where she said she& #39;ll come close to the bed + dutch tilt again
see that whenever irene is with seulgi, she shows this innocent shadow of hers like she& #39;s slowly trying to convince seulgi that she is kind
i personally think this is one of the turning points of the mv bc after this scene everything changed and seulgi started acting like how irene& #39;s 2nd shadow. it& #39;s as if she became a monster herself
this part where seulgi sings "i don& #39;t hate this madness i& #39;m having fun" like she became a whole different person. and the second cut she& #39;s aiming at her shadow or a grave that could be for her old self
this is interesting bc observe the way irene holds her doll, it& #39;s almost the same way how she holds seulgi on the second shot so it could possibly mean that she& #39;s also like a mother of little monsters? which is her other dolls
this part of the choreo where they& #39;re doing that sign of like hypnotizing you + they sing "i& #39;m bothering you making you dream only about me" like they& #39;re trying to make us, viewers as one of them
tw // gore, horror

this part of the dance where irene is bending behind seulgi and seulgi doesn& #39;t see her, she decides to show her true self to us.
this reminds me of the usual narratives in horror films where the monster always has this one victim that doesn& #39;t see the true colors of the monster itself or perhaps they choose not to see it seeing how seulgi controlled irene in the choreo
see how irene controls seulgi in this scene? also the dancers& #39; eyes reminds me of how the black swan looks
notice the doll irene is holding in this cut. instead of children looking dolls in the past shots, it& #39;s a bear. like how we use the bear emoji for seulgi which further pushes my theory that seulgi became one of her dolls or little monsters
here seulgi sings "you can try to come out of the dream but monster lives forever" sounds like one a warning that you can escape them but there will always be a monster inside you
in the beginning you can see irene seemingly look like she& #39;s leading the way for her little monsters but in the end seulgi became the new monster leading everyone
see at the end we see irene controlling everyone and seulgi poses as one of her little monsters
anyway this mv is heavily influenced by horror films and this theory or idk what to call is only my thoughts and im not a pro im just a film student so i decided to share these observations. feel free to add!!
