On this day 1992, the first non-racial official South African team played an international match against Cameroon in Durban in the post-Apartheid era after decades of international isolation. They won 1-0 thanks to a penalty from majestic Doctor Khumalo.
This photograph of the racially segregated arena, taken in 1969, stands as a reminder of how the entire nation was divided by the issue of race. Bafana Bafana came back strongly and qualified for the FIFA World Cup within 6 years.

Even segregated water fountains
One more story to share: Doctor Khumalo’s father nicknamed Professor was also a South African football legend and mentored the Doctor in his young age. He was sadly killed during a hijacking event.
