How much is enough?

//Thread//
Enough is a very underrated word.

Rarely used when it comes to living a decent life.

“Enough” has no real definition applicable to all.

It’s to each his own.
It’s about choosing a life of hedonism versus contentment.

For a hedonistic lifestyle, no amount is enough.

For a content lifestyle, even a hut is enough.
It’s about happiness.

While happiness is relative to the pleasure one seeks, answering the enough question makes it easy.

“Money is human happiness in the abstract: he, then, who is no longer capable of enjoying happiness in the concrete devotes his heart entirely to money”
Most of us in the lure of fortunes, become slaves. We devote our entire life to working for someone else to buy things which never provide incremental happiness.

“A great fortune is great slavery”. Seneca
You never win by single mindedly chasing wealth.

Because you do not know where to draw a line.

The day you know that you’re not chasing wealth anymore, you have achieved enough.
Money is addictive.

So how do you break your addiction. You create firebreaks.

It’s akin to creating a gap in forest to avoid spread of fires.

Constantly ask yourself what you want. Devote your time to that. By repeating this, the firebreak is bound to work.
Attachment to money makes it difficult for anyone to know the difference between evil and righteous acts.

Chasing money in itself is not evil. It’s just that we focus on buying things we don’t need succumbs us to engage in acts of compromising nature just to acquire more money.
“People who pursue luxuries are driven, both in private and in public, to commit countless wicked and deadly acts”

Musonius Rufus
More money comes at the cost of your family, friends, firms and countries. You can align your values with making profits but most time, it’s difficult.

A simple act of making more money through multiple hustles leads to lesser time with family.
The best way to figure how much is enough is through practice.

Reflect on your past spending habits. Find out how much you need to live the same life.

If it doesn’t work, make changes. Live the new life for a year. See if it works. Find out the amount needed to live this life.
Often living a frugal life is the best answer to finding how much is enough.

You know that you don’t need much to live a good life. No matter what.
It’s all about possibilities for enjoyment now versus creating potential opportunities in your future when you may no longer be able or be around to even enjoy the money.

Often aligning your future needs with your current self comes at a cost.
After finding how much is enough, one wouldn’t -

1. Get into debt
2. Work in a job one hates

& would

3. Live a life true to himself
4. Avoid existential disappointment
5. Become anti-fragile
The biggest asset of knowing how much is enough is that you get an opportunity to live a great life.

You don’t want to reflect back and only see yourself working for someone your entire life.

Take some time today. Find out how much is enough.
