I am, like pretty much everyone else on twitter, a random with an account with little expertise in responding to a breakout of a deadly virus in a poorly designed public housing tower.
I couldn’t see how else the Vic government could have managed an urgent need to deploy mass groups of people to stop the spread than to use the police in that first response. It is possibly the case health workers and social workers can’t be deployed so swiftly?
We are, however, in the next phase. Surely by now most of the police can be replaced by community and social workers, and a more sensitive and efficient food distribution system set up. There’s enough evidence to suggest that the current set of processes is deeply flawed.
What is not helpful right now are the following:
- Labor megaphones telling people with legitimate criticism to shut up
- People gaslighting those who are reporting from the area
- People attacking Trades Hall and other organisations working to provide support
These are also issues at the moment. Filtering out misinformation and (well intended) shouting has been more difficult than usual. https://twitter.com/lostatlunch/status/1280319273601077254?s=21 https://twitter.com/lostatlunch/status/1280319273601077254
