Tonight's storm in DC brought down part of a tree on my street. TBA on the fate of the mustang.
When you live in a basement apartment and a storm is loud enough to wake you up, you check the back drain. Good thing I did, cuz nearly two inches of water had pooled up and I had to reach out into the torrent to frantically clear debris before it started flooding in.
This was a photo I took during the earlier storm, when the pooling was happening but still under control. The bricks help prevent debris from covering the drain, but the seal was so tight and the rain so heavy tonight that no water was getting through and pooling even more.
Everything seems to be okay now. I'm dried off and my adrenaline has come back down. It's been a while since something went wrong in such an urgent way as opposed to the low hum of menace that has otherwise been the status quo.
I love storms but not flooding. I hope everyone else in DC is doing ok tonight. The safety of my space feels so much now precious to me four months into lockdown and I don't want anyone else's threatened in such a way. I got lucky but others may not.
Anyways, how's the insomnia crowd tonight? Anyone else dealing with surprise crises that threaten the sanctuary they've replied upon for months and require them to get soaking wet or just me?
Ugh and in my sudden insomnia I turn to Facebook to see the most gorgeous photos of one of my college best friends with his newborn daughter and now I'm crying.
