Pat Cleveland. She appeared on the cover of Vogue in 1970. She relocated to Paris and became a household runway model for ChloƩ. She also walked for YSL, Mugler and DVF and stated that she would not return to the US until another black model appeared on US Vogue.
Iman. Establishing herself as a supermodel in the 1970s, she became an almost instant success in the fashion world. She became a muse for dozens of high fashion designers, including Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent and Issey Miyake.
Donyale Luna. She is often considered to be the first black supermodel, being the first black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue in 1966. She was so ethereal that a sketch of her made it on the cover of Harper's Bazaar in 1965.
Beverly Johnson. The first African-American model to appear on the cover of US Vogue in 1974. She has more than 500 magazine covers under her belt, and became the trigger for fashion designers to use more black models!
Naomi Sims. She was dubbed as "the first African-American supermodel". She suffered through major racial prejudice throughout her career, but broke through regardless and appeared as the first AA model on Life magazine at the peak of the "Black is Beautiful" Movement.
Grace Jones. Her androgynous, bold looks intrigued the modelling industry so much when she moved to Paris in 1970. She walked for brands such as YSL, Kenzo Takada and Claude Montana. She also appeared on the cover of Elle and Vogue Paris.
Billie Blair. A runway veteran, she and a few other dozen models of colour took part in the Battle of Versailles runway show in 1973, which skyrocketed her modelling career.
