I visited one of the hardest hit care homes in Peterborough. 7/18 residents died in two weeks. The only place I have visited that took every single precaution perfectly to no avail. They had no help & no guidance. They were distraught. It is appalling to blame them. https://twitter.com/doctor_oxford/status/1280227666323480578
It’s hard to exaggerate how much the government is lying. They had to invent every procedure themselves. Staff slept there to protect residents. I arrived and was given an egg timer set for 20 mins. They trained me (!) how to wash my hands & I did it every 20mins
We wanted to film in one of the empty rooms. The nurse said she couldn’t go in - he had been the first patient she admitted 4 years ago & she’d been his family since then. He had dementia but was very cheerful & kind & helped the other residents
When he died other residents also with dementia didn’t all know he was gone but they drank less, ate less and moved less without him. The staff couldn’t attend the funeral and the residents stopped being allowed to leave their rooms
Extremely hard to explain to someone with severe dementia why they are shut in a small room in a pandemic and even harder to care for them. They said they might typically lose one or two people per year. These were not deaths that “would have happened anyway”
I’ve never had a relative in a care home. I didn’t realize that for many residents the staff are their family - that these deaths were unbearably awful for the staff and compounded by guilt, fear and extremely difficult working conditions and uncertainty
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-england-cambridgeshire-53248468/coronavirus-peterborough-care-home-boss-says-deaths-knocked-mental-health this is the place. Not super posh but I’d be glad to end up there with staff who care that much
The loss of that many residents also leave the homes in a precarious financial position. And if they can’t afford to operate then residents get discharged to... where? Hospital? Other homes? Increasing the risks of infection further
