Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. As schools grapple w decisions about reopening buildings, there’s a major concern not being talked about: teachers will be put in the position of choosing between their careers & keeping high risk family members safe. 1/ #edchat #teach
Imagine having to cope w that. If your parent or child is high risk, you now have to either just hope you don’t spread it or need to avoid seeing him for the entire school year. This isn’t right. Teachers are already on the frontlines every day & deal w unbelievable challenges 2/
Most recently, teachers were expected to put their lives on the line as school shootings became the norm. Active shooter drills, lockdowns, you name it, & they dealt w it. Now, many have to choose between their jobs & keeping their families safe during a global pandemic. 3/
I don’t envy the work of any school admin put in the position of figuring this situation out. There’s just so many variables and no easy solution. Teachers want to be in the classroom. We miss our kids. However, we need to keep everyone safe including our own families. 4/
I’ve read so many posts about teachers redoing their basements & attics so they can isolate there if school buildings open. They’d miss holidays & birthdays away from their families. Others recognize they won’t see their parents, grandparents, & other high risk family members. 5/
It’s so heartbreaking. Let’s keep that in mind when the conversation about reopening buildings comes up. Teachers aren’t looking for a way out or to be difficult. They just want their families to be safe too. 6/6
