Over the weekend, our EiC sparked a conversation about reviewing movies and using or not using stars/letter grades/whatever to do so. We thought you all might appreciate some insight in how the writers here at The Spool feel about it.
One of our writers insists on an 8-star scale. It is always cut and the writer always rages about it. Why 8 as opposed to 10 or 4 or 5? The reviewer claims this is a trade secret and legally does not need to be disclosed.
Another includes a mathematical proof that needs to be solved to get the movie's grade. None of these proofs have ever been solved.
A third writer insists, "There is no objective truth therefore it is not just impossible but immoral to rate a movie in any manner, up to and including calling it, 'good' or 'bad.'"
Most of us though? We just like making things harder for Rotten Tomatoes.
