Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi refused the invasion and colonialition of the benin kingdoms, so the British empires exiled him and stole artifacts from the Benin kingdom(including the mask of Queen idia) and burnt the kingdom down (read one the Benin expedition of 1897
Benin City’s planning and design were done according to careful rules of symmetry,proportionality n repetition now knwn as fractal design.d mathematician Ron Eglash,author f African Fractals,notes dt d city n its surrounding villages wre purposely laid out 2 form perfect fractals

In conclusion just like the ancient city of Benin many other African cities existed and survived on matriarchy, an almost perfect agrarian society before colonization
