Wow. My heart skipped a beat. I was not expecting this news.

Ontario to end streaming in Grade 9 and change other ‘racist, discriminatory’ practices. Thanks for reporting @krushowy

Noticing streaming while in HS is one reason I became an activist and doing @helpinghands
At the time I didn’t know the word for it. It wasn’t something you heard people talk about in the media. All around me, I noticed the Black kids in my school get pushed into applied. I stood out as one of the few ones in academic. I asked about this in grade 9 and was dismissed
One time I was questioned if it was a mistake that I wrote D instead of P during course selection. (acaDemic vs aPplied) We take these levels as an all or nothing approach. You struggling in math, well applied everything.

My brothers both were streamed into applied courses.
The younger one who is still in high school wanted to be an engineer, scientist, or in business in elementary school and had grades in the 80s. I was shocked when I realized he was placed in applied. Within 2 month of HS, he would come home and say he’s dumb
I’ve never been able to convince him he’s not. It has been painful to watch and I feel guilty. I have spoken to countless parents through @helpinghands educating them on the different streams so they can best support their child. The system should have never been this way.
Thank you to @endstreaming, @WRT_PDSB and all the countless people that made this happen. If you know someone tag them!
