A funny thing happened on the day of the Tokyo gubernatorial election - CDP politicians suddenly felt compelled to tweet about Utsunomiya, a city famous for gyoza, with the hashtag #宇都宮
You're not supposed to campaign on voting day, so they couldn't encourage Tokyoites to vote for their preferred candidate, Kenji Utsunomiya, who shares his last name with the city.
By coincidence, CDP politicians, including leader Yukio Edano, thought election day was the right time to profess their love of Utsunomiya (the city)'s gyoza. That would not violate election law, obviously.
Meanwhile, the poor Utsunomiya Gyoza Association took to twitter to let people know it was as surprised as anyone to find Utsunomiya trending, and they politely asked people not to hate on the city's gyoza because of the association with politics.
