#Dadaocheng's Ama Museum — the first facility to shine light on the history of #Taiwanese #ComfortWomen — will close down in November due to operational difficulties stemming from the #Covid19 pandemic. #Taiwan #慰安婦 🥺 https://www.amamuseum.org.tw/tw/title/200
"Ama" is a term of endearment and a collective term of respect for #women of the older generation. #Taiwanese Amas have suffered from patriarchal culture and the conflict of #war. As a colony of Japan, #Taiwan estimates at least 2,000 women were forced to serve as #comfortwomen.
To prevent soldiers from rape and prostitution among the general populace, leading to the spread of STDs and risk of protest movements, the Imperial Japanese Army established "comfort stations" as sexual outlets to maintain discipline and prevent the leaking of military secrets.
During #WWII, the Japanese government recruited #Taiwanese " #comfortwomen" to serve at sites all over Asia. Of the 59 survivors, the museum surveyed 58 — 12 were #indigenous Taiwanese, 12 were #Hakka, and 35 were #Hoklo. Their ages ranged from 13 to 34, with an average age of 20.
They were exploited between 1939 and 1945. Besides the 11 #indigenous #women who were forcibly pressed into service in #Taiwan, the other #Taiwanese #comfortwomen were all shipped to sites in China, Indonesia, Okinawa, East Timor, Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
Confined to comfort stations, these #Taiwanese Amas sacrificed their freedom and dignity, suffered mental and physical trauma. The term " #comfortwomen" does not reflect the inhuman treatment of these underprivileged #women — it is misleading vocabulary concealing sexual violence.
Up to this day, the Japanese government refuses to acknowledge any wartime responsibilities or offer official reparations. The survivors are dying, and documenting and preserving the historic truth about #Taiwanese #comfortwomen have become the only ways for the victims to heal.
" #Comfortwomen" were acquired in #Taiwan for Japanese military service through (1) entrapment and deception, (2) forced relocation for assigned work, and (3) human trafficking and sexual slavery.

No one volunteered.
The Ministry of Culture and Taipei City Gov are now in talks with the Ama Museum for relocating to Wanhua or Zhongzheng district and a possible reopening date of summer 2021! https://cna.com.tw/news/ahel/202008140107.aspx
