THREAD. Inclusivity is vital for theatre to not just survive but thrive. At the heart of structural change is a commitment to class diversity & we have heard little about how the industry can support it’s WBCU-C members post-pandemic. Why?
There’s multiple causes and often they are hard to locate. Is it because governments past and present have really convinced us that we are now in a class-less society? Is it because it’s hard to define and monitor?
Is it because there’s limited acceptance that WBCU-C artists face not only financial inequality but social & cultural inequality too? Or that middle class artists with limited finances suddenly perceive themselves as working class?
Hundreds of WBCU-C artists are leaving the sector. What are we planning to do to ensure their return when we get through this pandemic? @ace_national @uk_theatre
With support from @newdiorama @RTYDS @youngvictheatre & alongside @catshoob we have been regularly running Class & Coronavirus meetings, facilitating a forum where WBCU-C can connect with one another. They have been attended by 200 WBCU-C artists. More details ⬇️
The news of a 1.57 billion rescue package means we will get through this but we MUST ensure it is used to meaningfully promote inclusivity and reaches vulnerable freelance artists as well as organisations.
Shout out to @debbiehannan @cultureofcommon @stagesight #freelancetaskforce #nessahmuthy for listening and doing the work to get awareness out there.
