Some in the LGBT community are giving @jk_rowling a lot of stick for this tweet. She is speaking the truth. It is possible to acknowledge this while showing respect, support and openness to trans people and those with GD. A short thread. 1/ https://twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1279756114981240834
The fight for legal acceptance of people who are homosexual was long. It is still being fought in many places. What is often overlooked by those who aren't gay is that the first "coming out" we do is to ourselves. We have to accept that "I am attracted to my own sex" 2/
There was a campaign a few years ago #ItGetsBetter that sought to send a message to young people who were starting the journey of coming out, that despite the challenges they might be facing that things would improve. This was a good and positive thing to do. 3/
What we are seeing now is a step backwards. Mainstream LGBT organisations are promoting the idea that to be lesbian or gay is not to be homosexual, but rather it is to be attracted to the "same-gender" 4/
If you believe this or promote it, you are promoting the idea that a person who is only attracted to members of their own sex (homosexual) can be either gay or straight, depending on how they identify their gender. 5/
When mainstream LGBT orgs are telling homosexuals that they may be straight because of their identity and despite their sexual orientation, something has gone terribly wrong. 6/
Lesbians have been raising the alarm about this for years and have been shouted down and called bigots and worse. I have been proud to add my small voice to theirs and I thank @jk_rowling for using her platform to add her much louder one
