for years i’ve had to face torment + abuse from my own community for vocalising that assyrians + yezidis deserve no more or less than what we want in the region—that we should not gain at their expense. 5yrs ago when i started openly having this discussion, i got relentless abuse
from people weaponsing my identity as an alevi and therefore a “weaker” and “traitor” by default, to kurds abusing me for my relationship w my partner. 2015-2019 was nasty. but along the way, i’ve come met wonderful, likeminded people and this what advocacy is about:
it’s about drawing out the good people in the community and normalising unity, honesty, and accountability. i’m really glad that more people in the community feel safe, willing and able to stand up for other minorities. i haven’t stopped what i’ve been doing for years already.
but i am really, really glad that more people are joining this circle. it’s really reassuring and encouraging. let’s have more of that.
