For your first few HMs/FMs, you don’t need to be looking much at the numbers. The most important thing is hitting the *minimum* mileage and once a week, add in some speed https://twitter.com/mohamadarsi/status/1279728267952455680
Imma share a thread my training experience although this may not get that many views 😂 but whoever reads it hopefully gets some insight into how individual running is to every person (sorry @mohamadarsi tumpang your tweet 🤭)
FM #1: Melbourne Marathon Oct 2017

Only 6 weeks before the race did I realise I had to start training for a full marathon LOL. I found @KyserunKrew and joined an AM session. Fml it sucked cuz it was my first time running in hilly MK and I only knew gym and treadmill before that
This was my mileage leading up to that race, didn’t even reach 200km in September HAHA. But I went for Tues & Fri AM sessions. I did a few (note: 4 huhuh LSDs) including 1 30km. Basically I was doomed lah for this race if you look at my training
Came the morning of October 15th and alhamdullilah I ran my first FM in 4:07:17
FM #2: Chicago Marathon 2018

Learning from the lack of preparation from Melbourne, I decided to semangat sikit my training since I had a whole year to prepare for it 😂 was running consistently-ish post Ramadhan 2018 and continued the momentum from then.
My only criteria was to hit a minimum of 60km a week for a few weeks and up it to 70-80km for about 3-4 weeks before tapering. In addition, I added a HIIT session that I used as my speedwork + strength work combined. I know, I know “ehhhhh that ain’t speedwork”
If anyone knows me, I ABSOLUTELY hate speed work. Training for SCKLM HM 2018 I incorporated trackwork into my training but then I got shin splints *boohoo* and yeah, didn’t like the track after that. But obviously I still needed the required anaerobic training.
Anaerobic in a nutshell is your HR going super fast. And in any HIIT workout, you feel like you’re going to have a heart attack. That is the same with running a lot of hills. Your HR is through the roof majority of the time during a hilly route.
Anyways, going into FM #2, my training was definitely not by the book. But always remember, what works for others, may not work for you and if you know if something works for you and you feel good about it. Stick to it. I ran a 3:41:18 on October 7th, 2018.
FM #3: Amsterdam Marathon 2019

Ah this was an interesting one. I was injured a lot last year (emotionally too, banyak sakit hati lol). Anyways, I had to really take care of what I was doing to my body. Had a really bad tendon sprain coming out from Ramadhan
I still did my LSDs, joined the JIM gang for several sessions (I always did my LSDs easy, these guys really pushed me to incorporate MRP to my long runs). I did a couple of track sessions which failed miserably. I think I only ever finished 2 track sessions last year 😂
This marathon was a mental game. I wanted to run under BQ time so badly, but after so many tears and moments of denial and finally accepting reality, I let go of all expectations and just decided to run with wtv I could.
On October 20, 2019, I PBed my HM (lel) but then bonked quite badly huhu and finished my third marathon in 3:47:43
Lessons from running:
1) ENJOY IT. Whats the point in doing something if you find no joy or pleasure in doing it?
2) Following a program? Good. If not? Not a bad thing either. Structure in life is important, but if you can work without it, then you do you
3) the numbers are really not that important. Below is what my vdot training times are meant to be. The few times I did tempo runs, I could barely run below 5:10 pace consistently for more than 3km huhu.
All in all, there’s really no magical formula in running. Do not fixate on the numbers altho it’s hard to not think you’re slow when you start to compare yourself to when you were super fit or to that person who you used to push, but is now miles ahead of you
I’m not sure how to end this thread lol. I know i didn’t go into much detail about my training but essentially what I wanted to say is it’s ok to run and train how you want and lagi penting, run fast to chase your better self, not to chase the “better” pace
