Malaysians, Al-Jazeera, and Migrants ; a Thread.

Many Malaysians are quite furious with AJ's coverage of our policy towards migrants. They say that we were slandered, that AJ is lying, that they have no right to judge us.

You know, maybe AJ is the pot calling the kettle black
But the thing about that proverb is, we are both guilty.

Malaysians have become defensive and they have acted in a way that elicits "an attack on one of us, is an attack on all of us".

The problem is, the government isn't one of us.
Why are we so quick to the defense of this government's actions against the migrants? What the government did is not what we Malaysians did or asked for.

But once you double down and start defending the government instead of criticising and protesting them, you become complicit
There is a better way to help migrants, Malaysians, everyone.

It is not a betrayal against Malaysia to criticise the government, it is a betrayal against Malaysia to support and be complicit in acts that makes our country look bad.

We are NOT our government. We are Malaysia.
The government serves Malaysia and her people, not the other way round.

If you love this country like you say you do, you wouldn't be defending what is happening to the migrants.

Forced detention centers that are breeding grounds for disease is NOT what my Malaysia stands for
Persecuting those running away from genocide is NOT what my Malaysia stands for.

Saying "At least we didn't treat them worse" implying that we would have done acts of brutality, is NOT what my Malaysia stands for.
AJ put a spotlight on our country and what the government has been doing. This is our chance to prove to the world that we are not our government. That we are better than them and we want to help everybody, and treat them decently, regardless of where they come from
This is our chance to make Malaysia a country for everybody, a country that stands for liberty, equality and brotherhood. One that does right by all human beings.

You say you love Malaysia? That you're a proud patriot? Then make this country something worth being proud of.
