the word femboy was first created in the 1990s as a derogatory way to refer to trans women and feminine (assumed gay) men. but that isn’t it’s modern use. it was internet only and seemingly not used a lot.

how it got catapulted into modern use was through porn. it was used to described extremely fetishized trans women, and, less so, gay men, and became a porn term. it would be included with terms like trap and yaoi.

while the word may have been used for hateful homophobia and transmisogyny, the word as we know it has been reshaped and now is rooted in the sexualization of trans women and gay men, especially trans women.

as the word stands, it’s a transmisogynistic first, homophobic seacond, slur.
