[QUICK THREAD: ADDITION TO 4TH OF JULY]

Interested in a crazy example of the "butterfly effect"? Here:

The Great Bengal Famine of 1770 killed almost a third of the Bengali population. This cost the East India Company over £400k in revenue losses.
2/5
The famine triggered food riots and civil uprisings crushing which cost another £160k in military expenses. This pushed the Company to the verge of bankruptcy. Wars in Europe meant sales were further down.
3/5
So the Company requested the British government for financial help. A stimulus package, if you will. But Britain had already bled much money in the French and Indian War, so any monetary injection was difficult. Then there was an idea.
4/5
The Parliament passed the Tea Act of 1773 making the East India Company exempt from taxes on tea sales in the Thirteen Colonies. The colonists found this discriminatory. They requested the Crown to reverse the law. Didn't help. Then they tried violence.
5/5
They started boycotting tea in favor of a new beverage from within the New World, coffee. The violent part of this boycott was the Boston Tea Party.

So essentially, America is a free counter today and drinks coffee because 10 million people once starved to death in India.
*country. F*** me sideways! 😡
