Fernando Alonso's Greatest Moments 🇪🇸1⃣ - The Thread:
Part 1: Overtakes & Saves
Alonso casually going around the outside of both Kimi Raikkonen & Lewis Hamilton in one corner - Spain 2013
Alonso vs Prime Button around the outside (commentators can't believe it) - Brazil 2011
unreal late braking vs Webber - Europe 2012
championship on the line - double overtake - Brazil 2012
Alonso playing Hamilton for 7 corners, then taking him - Great Britain 2012
Alonso vs Webber -somehow- around the outside of the Roggia chicane - Italy 2013
5 laps to go, battle for the win, around the outside, touching tyres, nearly going off. perfect - Europe 2007
Alonso vs Michael Schumacher around the outside at the narrowest of all permanent race tracks in the wet - Hungary 2006
Alonso vs Schumacher in 130R, iconic. - Japan 2005
worst McLaren ever, doesnt hold him back from passing a Red Bull around the outside - China 2015
again around the outside of turn 3 in spain, this time vs Ocon - Spain 2018
Massa got a special treatment, just like Schumi - Hungary 2006
UNREAL save with the championship on the line, barely even lost time
epic save in Turkey 2007
Part 2: Legendary Race Performances
1 - The 2012 European GP
Alonso started in P11 in a rather uncompetetive Ferrari. In unbelievable fashion he made overtake after overtake and found himself in P2 when Vettel retired. His greatest win.
2 - The 2010 Singapore GP
Red Bull toom 15/19 Poles that year and Singapore was clearly a Red Bull track. yet, somehow, Alonso took pole and defended his lead with a perfect grand chelem to the line in the hardest race of the year, finishing 0.2 seconds ahead of Vettel
3 - The 2012 Malaysian GP
probably his unlikeliest win ever. The Ferrari was a total dog for the first 4 races of 2012 and nowhere near the podium. But in the rain of Malaysia he mastered the conditions and held off Perez to take a win from 9th on the grid
4 - The 2007 European GP
in the heavy rain at the Nürburgring many drivers crashed off track in turn 1. Alonso and Massa held it together and led away for the entire race. When the rain came down again towards the end Alonso put in incredible laps and took the lead from Massa
5 - The 2010 Korean GP
Alonso once again proved he's the number 1 guy to take advantage of difficult conditions. It was raining and at the end of the race light was completely faded in Korea and through it all, Alonso took the win.
6 - The 2006 Hungarian GP
Alonso had to start in P15 after a penalty in qualifying. Again it was raining and he put in the greatest opening lap in F1 history and on lap 17 (!!) he took the LEAD. He would've put in his greatest win ever if his car didn't fail him after a pit stop.
7 - the 2018 Azerbaijan GP
Alonso suffered a double puncture and by that severe damage to his car on lap. He only just manged to get his car to the pits and when everyone thought he'd have to retire he finished in P7.
8 - The 2005 Japanese GP
while it was overshadowed by Kimis greatest win ever, Alonso went from P16 to P3 and pulled off the amazing overtake on Schumacher in 130R.
9 - Spain 2013
His last ever win in F1 was one his best. He started P5 which is the lowest starting position in a race win at Barcelona in history and brilliantly executed the 4 stop strategy to win the race
10 - The 2003 Hungarian GP
His first ever win in F1 and he immediately made a statement by LAPPING the eventual world champion Michael Schumacher.
honorable mentions (11-15)
Fuji 2008 : a race win in the 2008 Renault is something special.
Brazil 2012: With the title on the line he drove out of his mind
Hungary 2014: nearly WON in the 2014 Ferrari (wtf)
Monaco 2016: held off ROS for P5
Australia 2018: held off VER for P5
Part 3: His Greatest Seasons
1 - The 2012 Season
in my opinion the greatest individual season of the 21st century. The car was nowhere near race wins and with 13 podiums, 3 wins and 0 mistakes he missed out on the title by 3 points, absolutely unbelievable.
2 - The 2006 Season
6 wins in the first 9 races and a super consistent 2nd half meant he came out on top in a season long fight with Michael Schumacher out of all people. Unbelievable championship.
3 - The 2010 Season
After a messy first half, Alonso put on an incredible championship charge from Germany onwards. He came to Abu Dhabi in the lead of the championship with 4 wins and 7 podiums in the last 8 races. Unfortunately Ferrari destroyed his chances in that race.
4 - The 2005 Season
He became the youngest world champion in a fight with Kimi Räikkönnen and another 7 win season. never showed weakness or signs of cracking under pressure
5 - The 2014 Season
His worst Ferrari by far and somehow he got 2 podiums out of it, nearly winning Hungary which would've been unbelievable. He absolutely demolished his teammate Kimi Räikkönnen 161-55 points.
honorable mentions:
2008
2013
2018
Part 4: Teammate domination
Over the course of his career, no teammate has ever outscored Alonso in their total time together. Most notable was the complete domination of Felipe Massa at Ferrari.
After Massa left Ferrari, former world champion Kimi Räikkönnen returned to Ferrari to partner Alonso in 2014. Lets just say it was bloodbath.
in the last year of his career his teamate was Stoffel Vandoorne who he demolished 21-0 in qualifying.
in his championship seasons his teammate was Giancarlo Fisichella. in both years Fisico won a race early but over the course of the season stood 0 chance against the champ.
the time with Piquet as his teammate from 08-09 is best known for the crashgate scanal but Alonsos complete domination shouldn't be undermined.
In 2015 and 16 his teammate was Jenson Button. while JB "beat" him in 2015 because Alonso had more techincal issues, over their entire time it looked different.
Before Fisi his teammate was another Italian named Trulli. Again, in 2004 Trulli actually was 1 point ahead but over both years Alonso had the edge.
His Minardi teammates in 2001 never really stood a chance.
for a brief stint in 2009 Alonso partneree Grosjean at Renault. the rookie struggled a lot though.
The biggest argument people bring against Alonso is that he lost to a rookie Hamilton in 2007. There's a lot to this story (Alonsos Michelin driving style didn't work at all on Bridgestones etc.) but the numbers say no one beat the other. it doesn't get any closer.
