I hope this reverberates out into the community sooner rather than later: *Handing over 50%+ of your monthly income on rent should not - I repeat - should NOT be happening* 1/7 #peipoli #peihousing
Every day there are ads where residents are outraged at the - very likely - illegal rent increases that have infiltrated the market, in addition to the fact that new apartment builds across the city are not affordable. 2/7
Equally, I see folks berating low-income earners who are "clearly not working hard enough", and this is the "reason" why they can't afford rent or save up for a down payment on a house. 3/7
Our system as it currently operates does not allow tenants to safely report suspected illegal rent increases.. not to mention the time/labor required to track down an old tenant. It's absurd. 4/7
Say it with me: This standard of living for tenants is NOT ok. People deserve better than spending every waking moment wondering whether they can afford rent. People deserve better than living out of a car. They deserve better than overcrowded apartments. They deserve a home. 5/7
Whether you're one person, a group or an organization, please submit your input on the draft Residential Tenancy Act. It might seem like a futile gesture, but it is so necessary. https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/service/give-input-residential-tenancy-act 6/7
Front-line workers from all sectors in this province know what I'm talking about when I say people are suffering because of how inaccessible our rental market has become. We must fix this. 7/7 #peipoli #peihousing #charlottetown
Updating this thread to say: I recognize fully that the rental market has always been inaccessible, and it became insurmountably so very quickly on PEI. We need long-term + sustainable housing for folks that is well beyond our coveted rent subsidies.
