Unfortunately some people - even elected politicians - will be racist in public. But journalists get to decide whether they will platform it uncritically or take an opportunity to poke holes in it, which is what I did when confronted with the same choice.
This morning we could’ve seen Pauline her comprehensively fact checked live on air for the benefit of viewers who are tuning in ostensibly to hear what she has to say. And that actually would have been a good thing. A wasted opportunity at best and completely offensive at worst.
I knew what Anning was going to say and do when he went to Cronulla that day and I told my bosses I wasn’t going down there if they didn’t let me ask hard questions because otherwise we were just amplifying it. (They told me to go for it and I’m proud of what we did that day.)
It’s a choice. You choose how you deal with what these people say. You can let them have their free speech but you can make it a powerful teachable moment. All I had to do that day was present facts without any bias and the platform. falls. over. That’s what media should do.
This is my equal favourite fact check of my career so far, featuring retired YouTuber Lauren Southern. “Do you see any, British pubs?”

There’s one, right there.
