a thread about the service industry from a servers perspective: i have been apart of the industry since i was 16, i got hired originally as a host and did all the jobs, now im a server. this is such a toxic industry to grow up in

grown men think that they can say anything to us because they know we’re not going to do anything about it. as a host, i was told so many fucked up things. i was bored because “i was what the owner wanted the look of the restaurant to be”

i had a man once tell me that i would be a perfect addition to his collection, i had a man take pictures of me and come in on a separate day to deliver them because he printed them out, i have been touched, taunted, and all of the above.

i have had men follow me to my car at the end of a shift. i know i have only mentioned men, but everyone can do this too. my personal experiences have only been with men. they like to show off in front of their friends, i’ll have deragatory things told to me.

and i have to act like all of this is okay because if i don’t, then i lose money and i have a job because i need money to pay for the things i need in life, bills, and whatever else. not to be your play toy while you dine.

as a server, my job is to insure that you have the best dining experience as possible, that all of your needs while i am “taking care” of you are met. not for you to belittle me, flirt, touch, or do whatever else your heart desires.

it’s not a glamorous job, it’s not something i look forward to, so please don’t make it worse. i am 19 years old, every shift i get touched whether it’s my arm, lower back, or the occasional ass grab. i have grown up in this toxic male dominated industry

and have been taught that it’s okay because that’s just what happens. im sick of it, im sick of being silent about it and im sick of it happening. men, please stop touching your female waitresses, stop flirting and talking about them. it is toxic because we can’t say anything.
