disclaimer: i am not excusing his use of the n word, and im not excusing the one time he hit cynthia. both of those events were horrible and it is not my place to forgive him.
i’m trying to sound as unbiased as possible here! I’m just tired of all the misinformation about him.

1. ABUSE
A lot of people believe John Lennon was abusive toward women, including Yoko Ono. However, that is (mostly) false.

-the things that she loved, man, I was mean, but I’m changing my scene and I’m doing the best that I can.”
A lot of people try to use the first half of the line to prove he was a bad person, but choose to ignore the end of the line. Not long before his death, John said this in-

-an interview: “That was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically ― any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn’t express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace.-
-Everything’s the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am a violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster.” He took responsibility for his-
-actions, and had his life not been cut so short, he would have definitely changed his ways fully.
Some people like to say that he was abusive toward his son, Julian- Which is not true. He was definitely neglectful, and he knew that. Near the end of his life he had been-

But of course, if someone recognizes they did some really bad things and tried their hardest to get better, they’re not worthy of forgiveness. /s

Adding onto that section: Some people believe Yoko Ono was abused by him, however that isn’t true.
Here is a long synopsis of their relationship, I strongly reccomend you read this.

TL;DR: Yoko was abusive toward John, taking advantage of his love, his vulnerability, and his fame, forcing him to do drugs, not letting him see his friends, and as soon as he died, the man Yoko had cheated on John with moved in with her.
Not to mention her using his bloody glasses from the day he died to promote one of her albums.
This thread is not a Yoko-hate post, however I just wanted to shed some light on the fact that she was horrible to him.

2. HOMOPHOBIA
This accusation is very farfetched.
To begin, this was the 60’s and 70’s. Homosexuality was only decriminalized in 1967 in the UK, and in most US states, in 2003.
Homophobia was, and still is very much prominent.
However, John was the opposite of that.-

I’m sure we all know Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ gay manager. There have been rumors of John and Epstein ‘fooling around’ on a vacation in Spain. In the memoir ‘The Beatles, Football And Me’, official Beatles biographer Hunter Davies wrote that John had told him that he had a-
“one-night stand” with Epstein while in Spain together.
In 2013, Yoko Ono confirms that John was bisexual.

So where is the proof of him being homophobic? Simple answer: There is none, other than using the f slur on occasion (reminder- the word was more normalized back in the-
60’s and 70’s, especially in the UK, being used to refer to cigarettes- however that doesn’t excuse the usage!)
In short, John wasn’t homophobic, he was bi himself.

3. RACISM
This accusation is a touchy subject but, much like the previous one, seems pretty farfetched to me as well- however I am not black so I don’t have a place in forgiving him for this- I am just here to disprove the misinformation.

John wasn’t racist, neither was any of the Beatles. Yes, he sang the distasteful “n word song” (as I’ve seen it be referred to) but looking into it, it doesn’t make him racist at all, just... very distasteful.-
-Yoko Ono wrote the infamous lyric, “Woman is the ——— of the world.” John didn’t even like the lyric, but decided to let the lyric stay. The original lyric was “woman is the slave of the slave”, a line that ends up staying in the song either way.
Now, if John didn’t like the lyric, why would he have decided to keep it? I honestly do not know.
And while the original lyric is pretty distasteful as well, the song has a pretty good message, in summary saying that women are just as opressed in society as black people. While-

-that in itself is pretty badly executed, it would have had a very powerful message if not under the influence of Yoko’s writing.

Kind of off topic, but that specific article is a good read if you want to dig deep into his history of activism.

I made this thread because I’m tired of people saying he was such a bad person and sourcing piles of misinformation.
A ‘bad person’ is someone who does bad things and never takes responsibility for them and never changes. John was exactly the opposite of that.
