Thor Odinson and Bruce Banner fit and compliment eachother perfectly, and here's why, in a thread.
Firstly, to understand the relationship, we need to know the characters individually. What they’re like, what they need and what they want.
Starting with Thor, Thor is a character that’s emotionally driven. The choices he makes comes purely from his heart, he loves and he gives so much that it’s been his downfall on multiple occasions.
He’s a character that’s also driven by purpose and tradition, he needs to have something to do and someone to be in order to know who he is, he’s like this because being born into royalty and having a father who’s accomplished so much has put a heavy weight on his shoulders.
When he’s powerless he resorts to anger. Anger that’s directed on himself for not being able to be the one that saves the day. Thor’s greatest flaw is his ability to doubt himself and put himself in a position where he's constantly weighed by his actions and guilt.
I could go into full essay mode about Thor's personality, but let's instead move on to Bruce and Hulk. In order to understand these two, you have to know they are NOT the same person.
Bruce. Bruce Banner is a character that revloves a lot around himself and what he needs to do in order to survive. Don't get me wrong, Bruce is very capable of being selfless and he definetly has been, but generally, he is a selfish character.
He is used constantly for Hulk. Hulk, who's actions and blame are placed onto Bruce. Because of this Bruce has a conflict within himself, he feels all the guilt for the destruction that Hulk has caused yet knows he's the only one who can bring Hulk out and possibly save others.
Overall, Bruce is a character who constatly has a conflict going on within himself. He's overly stressed, and has a lot of trauma, but besides this, he's witty and brave and has a good heart, he wants to be able to do the right thing, but is afraid of what that means for himself.
Next, onto Hulk. This section will be a bit smaller.
Hulk himself, is practically a child. He of course isn't actually a child, but he's new to the world and doesn't know anything right from wrong. From day one, Hulk has been hunted down, shot at, detained and treated like a monster. Rarely does he get appreciation.
Hulk's relationship with Bruce is difficult. Hulk wants to be his own person, but he can't do that when Bruce won't let him out. Yet, Hulk loves Bruce. He wants to protect him.
It's of course your own choice if you want to ship Thor with Hulk alongside with Bruce, but either way, Thor is one of the few characters that Hulk has been able to connect properly with and call a friend.
Onto the character's needs and wants.
Thor, relationship wise needs someone who's able to ground him, be there for him and help him sort out his thoughts and feelings. They as well need to understand his need for a purpose and that he is restless and constantly on the move.
Bruce, relationship wise needs someone to allow him to be selfish. He needs someone he can fully trust and someone he knows he can't hurt. They need to be able to take things slowly and understand that he'd need time.
Bruce's kind heart and ability to speak his mind easily compliments Thor's need for someone who can ground him. We've seen it in the mcu, Bruce is the one who's there for him when Thor feels lost.
Thor has given Bruce reason to trust him. When Bruce showed his feelings to not wanting to turn into Hulk again, Thor respected it and chose to find another way. He as well, was patient and caring with Bruce all throughout ragnarok.
Bruce knows Hulk can't hurt Thor. Thor is a fucking powerhouse for one, and secondly, Hulk likes Thor.
Thor and Bruce also have a different level of understanding eachother when it comes to both being avengers. They know eachother's burdens, they're familiar with the pain they both go through with their job. Bruce knows Thor needs to be someone and Thor knows the toll of Hulk.
Another thing they both have in common is their feelings of guilt and anger. They have a mutual understanding for how badly it can effect someone.
some added bonuses as to why i think they'd be so good together:
bruce banner is a science man!! he loves that shit, you can see it in his eyes, it's what he loves spending hours of his time on. and thor?? well that's just common knowlegde for him. they'd be able to have so many conversations surrounding topics about space and technology...
HEIGHT DIFFERENCE
neither of them can die of old age.... talk about immortal husbands
