I understand critiques of #Hamilton that it doesn’t center slavery enough or lionized AH. I still think the casting of these figures as immigrants of color and Black people + the story and music is radical AF. (Haven’t read the Chernow book so cant speak to it)+
G Washington “father” of the nation and enslaver as a Black man? Radical AF. Jefferson as a self-absorbed attention hog whom Hamilton calls out re slavery in that rap battle? Much needed addition to Jefferson mythology. +
I’m not arguing with some of the critiques. (I am disagreeing with the most severe critiques, but not with the historical concerns.) I am saying that even with all this the mythology of the founders as heroes of freedom runs so deep that +
this vision of Black ppl and immigrants of color fighting for freedom, fighting with each other for power, was for me a powerful corrective and a challenge-then & now the nation has not lived up to the promises sung here. +
Also the relentless beat and choreography: this Is a vision of power and joy and force and strength and beauty.
Any white person who sees this show and isn’t shaken is willfully choosing to ignore the broken promises spoken and unspoken +
One thing I want to research (and I welcome links) is how tight the control LMM (and his future estate) has around future productions and casting of #Hamilton .
