@SeattlePD and @CityAttyPeteHolmes have been using a new tactic to abuse their power and keep people in jail for as long as possible. Every day this weekend, we’ve seen tactically timed arrests of protestors who are then overcharged with unnecessary felony charges
Because the charges are felony charges, they must go before a judge before they can post bail. But SPD is timing these arrests so that no one is able to go before a judge the same day as their arrest.
This overcharging means that those arrested must wait overnight in jail without bail until they can go before a judge. The next day, however, their charges are struck just before their court calendar and the city decides to not press charges
This is a clear abuse of power. SPD is inflating charges to deny protestors their rights, including their right to bail, and to intimidate folks when there is no intention of following through with the charges
@MayorJenny says that the city isn't charging protestors, but they are using these fake charges to lock people up for the maximum time possible while pretending that protestors are being treated fairly
