Per a family member, in my hometown of Yayu, Illubabor, young people set up three tents in different neighborhoods, with permission from local officials, to mourn the death of #HacaaluuHundeessaa. Residents have been bringing food and coffee to the tents, mourning together.
Also, so far, there have not been any clashes, either between officials and residents, or ethnic based conflicts. My nephew, whose great grandfather is said to have brought the first 'Tabot' to Illubabor, is a member of the ad hoc committee organizing the mourning.
I explicitly asked my sister, who has an Amhara last name and is perceived as such, if she's afraid. She said no. As far as she knows, the town and nearby towns (where we have Amhara and Oromo and mixed extended family) have been peacefully mourning.
This is not to diminish in any way the dangers other Amharas and Oromos have been facing in other parts of Ethiopia. The pain, the killings, the woundings. I am just telling you exactly what my sister, who lives in Oromia, told me.
