What started off as asking for clarification on a tweet about demisexuality has escalated into something else. I used my platform to elevate the argument against @theyasminbenoit specifically. As a white woman,I absolutely should’ve been more aware of how my position threatens 1/ https://twitter.com/scretladyspider/status/1279647988978257922
Black women in & outside of queer spaces. There is no excuse for this. Yes, Yasmin has a large platform, but that’s no excuse for the way I used mine here; my personal reasons do not matter. I fucked up. I am sorry, and I will try my best to do better in the future. 2/2
I wanna be clear that this is no longer just about a poorly worded tweet. My platform didn’t just discuss that. When Black people call me out, and they have, I try & listen. That’s what this is about. That’s what I mean when I say this has escalated.
My position as a white activist matters in that.
The people who are saying this was unnecessary are missing the larger picture; it’s not just about a singular tweet any more. A lot needs to be addressed about this, and this is something I needed to address and take accountability for.
My whiteness holds a power here that I should have been more aware of. If it was still just about demisexuality I think that would be a different discussion. But it’s more than that now, and we as white queer people need to be paying attention.
