COVID-19 is exploding in the US. Our public health response is fragmented, disjointed, confused.

Why? Mixed messages from our own experts. Experts who believe that #TestTraceIsolate is not possible in this country.

Case study: 👇

Humphreys is a public policy expert, yet his argument is that American CULTURE is incompatible with masks, testing, isolation.

In other countries, experts explain why these are necessary.

In our country, experts explain why these are impossible. /2 https://twitter.com/KeithNHumphreys/status/1259829368995512322?s=20
He argues widespread testing is impossible because Americans will refuse to get tested. Isolation is impossible because Americans will be non-compliant.

Meanwhile Arizonans line up at 4AM desperately trying to get tested. /3 https://twitter.com/mgarcianews/status/1278808764213149696?s=20
I've heard this many times before.

Experts who argue don't waste time/money on TB or HIV. Africans/Asians are trapped by their cultures.

Now there's a pandemic in our country, and these experts are using the same argument about OTHER AMERICANS.🤯/4 https://twitter.com/__emh/status/1277086018680872961?s=20
The subtext is obvious, isn't it?

East and West coasts are culturally superior; the people in the middle of the country are ignorant and backwards. /5 https://twitter.com/KeithNHumphreys/status/1259829717785436161?s=20
To those who say, "He's public policy, not public health!"

The public sees an "expert".

Sure, public health experts like @nataliexdean might make consistent recommendations, but the public just sees one professor arguing with another -> confusion. /6 https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1277234902606454784?s=20
And there are many public health experts who think the same as Humphreys.

So I have a message for them all. Don't blame the failure of the US COVID-19 response on your fellow Americans. Blame it on yourself.

Me? I never bet against America.

Happy post Fourth! 🇺🇸 /END
