Ppl being like "Hamilton is historical fiction" are missing the point of the critiques which is that fiction is not license for untruth. Critics are asking how Hamilton does disservice to the truth of slavery and the founding fathers by placing them in a desirable cultural light
Which is just to say that ppl mad at critiques of Hamilton seem to be missing that folks are not just analyzing the musical but the larger context where it has meaning. Why does this musical emerge at the time it does and to what effect?
Obvs everything ppl enjoy doesn't need to align with their politics. ppl can enjoy the musical or whatever, but many ppl who like it are just being like "well here's how it's good or not kind of fucked up and thus I'm good for liking it!"
And it's like, the point is not about your good or bad conscience. It's literally trying to understand what is the effect of this cultural product on our imaginations of slavery, the founding fathers, and the political, which you can't know if you don't ask in a critical way.
And you don't even have to want to ask that, but at least be honest about that instead of acting like folks who do want to ask those questions are out of pocket.
