In 1935 two Sikh men, Harbans Singh Lohgarh and Diwan Singh were admitted as practising doctors in the UK. They both had previous medical degrees from Punjab which were augmented with study at the universities of Middlesex and Birmingham respectively. #NHS72

They went on to be some of the first Sikhs to serve in the NHS which celebrates its 72nd birthday today.
Dr Diwan Singh was also a very notable leader of the fledgling Sikh community acting for much of the 30s and 40s as its defacto leader .
